Our publication “Facts and Figures” highlights the role of these companies as employers both domestically and abroad, their international engagement through direct investment, and their significance on the Swiss stock exchange.
Member Companies Are the Largest Group of Issuers on the SIX Swiss Exchange
At 62%, SwissHoldings’ member firms account for nearly two-thirds of Swiss market capitalization on the SIX Swiss Exchange (as of February 28, 2026). Compared to the previous year, the market capitalization of the member firms has increased by over 100 billion. SwissHoldings’ member firms continue to account for the largest share of market capitalization on the Swiss stock exchange.
More than one-third of Swiss direct investors’ capital stock is held by member firms
In 2024, the capital holdings of Swiss direct investors abroad totaled 1,340 billion Swiss francs, representing a 2% increase from the previous year. The share of SH companies in total capital holdings rose by one percentage point to 34%. The majority of this increase is attributable to new memberships.
Swiss corporations currently employ over 3.85 million people abroad
The total workforce of Swiss direct investors abroad declined slightly in 2024 compared to the previous year. SwissHoldings’ member companies recorded an increase in the number of employees abroad. The workforce grew by approximately 4%. New member companies were the key driver of this trend. The share of SwissHoldings companies in the total workforce abroad thus rose to 42%.
SwissHoldings member companies remain major employers
As of the end of 2024, SwissHoldings member firms employed over 1.8 million people worldwide. Overall, the workforce remained largely stable. While employment abroad increased, the domestic workforce declined slightly. Member firms continue to employ over 188,000 people domestically.
Regional trends in capital and workforce among member companies abroad
In terms of capital, there has been a significant shift in favor of North America. The capital of SwissHoldings’ member firms in the U.S. and Canada increased by approximately 33% in 2024 and now exceeds that in the EU. At the same time, capital in the EU declined.
The picture is more nuanced when it comes to the workforce. In the EU, the number of employees rose by over 4% compared to the previous year, while it remained flat in the U.S. and Canada. Increases were also recorded in Central and Eastern Europe, Africa, and Latin America and the Caribbean.
